Pulque, The Drink of the Gods

That is why the pulque better known as «The drink of the Gods» is fundamental in the Mexican tradition.

Due to the intoxication it caused, it became the main alcoholic beverage in Mesoamerica, and a complex religious cult was formed around it.

Its creation was attributed to mythical characters: the most important were the couple formed by Mayahuel, goddess of the maguey, and Patécatl, discoverer of the roots known as ocpatli, «pulque medicine», which were used to increase the intoxicating properties of the drink.

To end with the pre-Hispanic beliefs in which for each event or natural phenomenon corresponded to a different deity, the Spaniards massified the concept of a unique God and provider, for which the Pulque was made available to all and not only for the deities and the priests.

Mayahuel then becomes the Virgen de los Remedios and wine into the sacred drink.

THE CUSTOM OF DRINKING PULQUE IS APPROXIMATELY 2,500 YEARS OLD.

According to researcher Javier Gómez Marín, the first evidences happened specifically in Puebla territories, very close to Tehuacán.
